HollywoodNews.com: Mary Wilson reports that the album of all-new material she’s been working on– with songs by Brian and Eddie Holland and Lamont Dozier — will be out “within a couple of months.

“We haven’t decided on a name yet. It has something to do with my journey in life. It has a lot to say about life,” says the songstress who rose to fame as one of Motown’s legendary Supremes – who, of course, were hit-making giants thanks to songs turned out by Holland-Dozier-Holland.

Mary’s new album is “more adult contemporary,” she says. “It was originally supposed to come out this month, but it isn’t quite there yet. Of course, there’s no radio to play new music these days. There’s the internet and, well, we’ll figure out something.”

Right now, Mary’s busy with her “Up Close” shows, singing sultry ballads at jazz clubs including Hollywood’s Catalina Bar & Grill Sept. 2-5.

“I do ‘Body and Soul’ – there’s a little bit of that sexy thing going on. I do Joni Mitchell’s ‘Both Sides Now,’ that really sums up my life. I do ‘Here’s to Life’ – a very, very beautiful song.”

There’s not a Supremes song on the list. Those interested in hearing those golden oldies should go to one of her rock ‘n’ roll concerts, not her cabaret performances, Mary says. “I do my concerts all the time – although, this past year or two have been very, very slow with the economy down,” she observes, referring to the abysmal industry-wide concert scene . “There’ve been cutbacks on corporate shows, too. But they’ll pick up when the economy pick up.”

Review of “Up Close” at the Rrazz Room

Review by Charles Jarrett

First, I want to tell you about a venue that is considered by many to offer the best in first- class entertainment nightclubs in the Bay Area -the Rrazz Room. My wife, Karen, and I were treated to an absolutely delightful performance by one of the truly great song stylists of the 1960s and `70s- the one and only Mary Wilson, a beautiful and talented woman perhaps best known as the co-founder of the world-famous Supremes…

Wilson was everything I expected her to be, especially after receiving a glowing endorsement by actress Stefanie Powers last week during an interview about her upcoming tribute to the music of Lorenz Hart. Powers had seen Wilson the previous week in Los Angeles at the Catalina Room and asked me to tell her personally, as one professional to another, how terrific her show was. “Unbelievable,” she said, “this lady has still got it in spades.” I concur.

Wilson is non-stop excitement, expressing every emotion an entertainer could possibly deliver. She’s vibrant, touching, heartwarming and soulful. She is backed by some pretty terrific professionals, including the incomparable, sweet-lipped Winston Byrd on horn; Mark Zier, master of the keyboard and musical director; Ray Pannell on electric and acoustic guitar; Daniel Fabricant on the acoustic base; Donzell Davis, practitioner of percussion; and Daniel Fabrican whose sweet vocal accompaniment rounded out the exquisite sound of this nightclub experience extraordinaire.

Wilson brought back memories by singing Supremes hits “Love Child,” “Baby Love,” “You Can’t Hurry Love,” “My World is Empty” and her unmatched rendition of “Here’s to Life.” She brought both tears of laughter and joy to a packed house of passionate admirers. The audience was invited to join her in singing along, even on one occasion in joining her on the stage. She was warm, magnanimous in sharing her art and love of music with everyone in the intimate entertainment room. She spoke warmly and perhaps even a bit tearfully of her love of her dear friend and co-founder of the group, Florence Ballard, who passed away in 1976.

It was truly a spellbinding evening, enhanced by some of the finest musicians a compact little performance group like this could ever wish for. I loved it, the audience loved it and I eagerly look forward to having Wilson return to San Francisco for another enchanting evening at the Rrazz Room!
