Mary Wilson, Margie, and the Intensive Studies Program

March 8, 2012

“What an amazing Intensive Studies Program we just completed this past week! Actors from Ireland, Canada, France, Germany, Sweden, Hong Kong, Australia, and the great states of Florida & Illinois… they spent 2 weeks at my studio learning to “Live the Life” with a very special classmate – my best friend, Mary WIlson. That’s right. MARY WILSON FROM THE SUPREMES!
Mary and I have been friends since we met each other in 1968. It was fate that brought together this “supreme” singer and, (as Mary wrote in her book), “…this nice crazy Jewish girl who soon became my best friend.” I had switched my singing lesson with a friend and had arrived early for my session with Teddy Hall. I recognized her immediately as I was a huge Motown fan. She asked me if I would like to hear her new song “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You.” I was flattered and listened in awe. Mary was wonderful. She invited me to come to see Diana Ross and the Supremes at the Waldorf that evening and our paths were united from that moment on. In 1970, at the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas during the final show of Diana Ross and the Supremes, Mary and I toasted to our future. Two months later, I packed my clothes and left Long Island, New York to arrive in Hollywood, California. Mary changed my life. They say there are a few people in your life that can affect your destiny. Mary was there for me.
Over 40 years of friendship, I finally have been able to “pay it forward.” Mary wanted to start to fulfill a dream of acting and who better could assist her with that goal?! She began in the Fundamental Intensive that is taught by Zak Barnett at the Haber Studio. After she got that under her belt, she took a leap of faith and joined the two-week Intensive Studies Program with actors from all over the world. She never shared who she was. Mary wanted to be what she loves most – a student. Everyone fell in love with her, even before they discovered who she was. Mary has that way about her. Her warmth and positive outlook are genuine and we just feel good being around her.
As the workshop progressed, so did Mary. One day she returned to my home from class, glowing with happiness. With tears of joy in her eyes, she said, “Margie, Margie, I get it. I understand ‘Living the Life.’ I did your Phrase Technique. Oh Margie, thank you for this amazing opportunity.”
We celebrated her birthday this week at a Beverly Hills Restaurant. Her friends, Natalie Cole, Freda and Sherrie Payne, her son, and many others came to toast to her. And so did all of her new friends from her class! What a way to close this chapter.

I love you, Mary!!

“Living the Life”

Posted in Mary's Journal, News on March 18th, 2012 by MaryWilson

This winter, Mary attended an acting class, hosted by her best friend, Margie Haber, at the “Margie Haber Studio” in L.A. Mary joined actors from Hong Kong, Australia, Canada, Sweden, Germany, France, Ireland, Florida, Kentucky, Illinois and Calfornia in the Intensive Studies Program.

With over 80 hours of training, not only did they learn how to “Stop Acting and Start Living the Life of the Person,” but they forged friendships that will last a lifetime.

Amy Tsang of Hong Kong documented the fun they had while “living the life.” Take a few moments and enjoy!

Blacks In Hollywood and Film Program

Posted in Mary's Journal, News on March 18th, 2012 by MaryWilson

Ms. Wilson,

I just wanted to thank you for your extraordinarily wonderful moderation of the Blacks in Hollywood and Film program workshop on Saturday, March 10th at the West Las Vegas Library. It was a spectacular afternoon. The young people present enjoyed you and Bubba [Knight], and all of them expressed how glad they were to listen to, learn from and meet you. Even the Library Staff members and Arts Center Staff members found their way into that room to listen to and meet you (smile). The adults were all so happy to see how genuine you and Bubba were about presenting to the youth and all of us. The experience was so satisfying and I thank you so very much. We are all looking forward to having you come back and be with us again on Sunday afternoon, 3PM, March 25th at the West Las Vegas Library Theatre for the film screening of “Sparkle”. And equally as excited by the expectation of attending your Smith Center event honoring Lena Horne. So, again, please accept my most sincerest thank you and appreciation for your generous gift of your time and presence to our little program. Thank you bringing your granddaughter. We loved having her participate in our program.
