I have been re-visiting my The Supremes, “We Remember Sam Cooke.” Lovely, lovely singing by Florence, Mary and Diana. On “Chain Gang” when Mary say’s ‘well don’t you know’ in her smokey tones it is just superb along with the beautiful harmonizing. I especially enjoy the chorus of “Chain Gang” because it displays the three voices distinctively as individuals, but together as a finely blended trio. I just love it! You really hear Florence on the top, Diana in middle, and Mary on the lower harmony and it is quite stunning. When I play back the early harmony work of Mary, Diana and Florence I wish they had showcased this ability more. Don’t get me started on The Supremes Sing Country, Western and Pop…Lord have mercy! Or their lovely recording of “Put On A Happy Face” where they sing in unison and break into harmony – what a beautiful blend of female voices. I get worked up when I play them performing “Put On A Happy Face” because of not only the fantastic sound, but the “unity” that comes across thru the singing, by way of the cohesive vocal presentation. Mary, I just love you girls! Your contribution to the group is so significant and I’m glad you own it today; without any insecurity.
The Supremes will forever “KEEP ME HANGING ON.”
